Jeff Bezos resigns as Amazon CEO

I'm not sure it does, although agree that Holgate seems to be making multiple points

1) AWS is just one cloud, it's not even the biggest so you can't argue without AWS some of those things wont operate
2) Holgate's original argument was that Bezos was just a "middle man" who sold books and so doesn't deserve his wealth, what the original point was, was that he provides so much more. Holgate kept arguing that it doesn't matter as it's not a "primary or secondary industry" which according to him is pretty much all we need.
I think AWS is the largest ahead of Azure and GCP

If you’d made $200,000 a day, every day since the (hypothetical) birth of Jesus Christ you’d still have less money than Jeff Bezos

An investigation by the Daily Mirror revealed that Amazon had paid a total of £61.7 million in corporation tax over the past 20 years, despite making a total UK turnover of around £7 billion.

This compares to physical UK retailers like M&S, which paid £65.4 million corporation tax just in 2018, Tesco which paid £176 million, Dixons Carphone which paid £42 million and John Lewis which paid £43 million.

Incredible.

Why?

Because he's better at his life than you or me are at ours?

Elon Musk must be the anti christ is he?
This attitude is just so sad. If money is the only metric we measure out worth by then what a terrible state we live in.

or this more recent one.

Jeff Bezos could give every single Amazon employee $100,000 and he would still have more money than he had at the beginning of the pandemic.

What else are you measuring his life by?
His work ethic?
His family life?
His charity work?
His efforts to make his company more sustainable?

I measure him by his need to accumulate more wealth than he could spend in a thousand lifetimes whilst people are starving to death. He could give away $125b tomorrow and still be the 10th richest person in America. His company avoids paying taxes which literally makes your life shitter.
All he needs to do is pay his fair share. That’s all anybody can do.

You think if he paid more tax (which is the government's fault not his) my life would be better than it is right now? Would have zero effect as we wouldn't see a penny of it.

You said I'm sad for using money as a metric to measure him by? You did exactly the same thing and you want him to give away more of his money.

He couldn’t really though, could he? I mean technically I suppose he could give away 125b of his stock to these people but that would certainly reduce the price of the stock considerable so we’re back to no he could not.

As far as I am aware he pays what he is legally required to by the uk government, like all of these other multi nationals with low effective tax rates.

The thick ***** that inhabit this sorry little island vote against anyone that wants to do anything about it and declare them commies or something

I don’t blame anyone for gaming the system. It would be nicer if he didn’t have all those workers rights issues mind you. But it’s all just failure of the state to reign them in. At least we can’t blame the EU now. It’s up to Boris and co to get tough on these companies. I will not hold my breath

You seem to be equating legal requirement to fairness. Bizarre. I also don’t blame people for gaming the system. At least until they’ve made enough to live in luxury for the rest of their life. After that it’s pure and unnecessary greed.

Where do you think the relocation grants Amazon scoop up come from? Next time you think the area you live in could do with another health clinic for new parents or better social care for ex servicemen then good old Jeff has got the funding in his pocket.
Surely Amazon could say “we’re confident of success, we don’t need free money to provide jobs to poor areas.” But of course they don’t do they.

So you'd want him to voluntarily pay extra tax?

Like anybody on here would do that if they had the same money he does.

Another thing to take into consideration, if he hates humans so much why the investment in his space program like Musk's? To be frank the pair of them aren't going to live long enough to venture into space are they? Pumping millions and millions of dollars into their space programs because like it or not humanity needs to expand into the stars. Colonising planets is the way forward. It's not sci fi movie stuff either, it's a very real plan. Our grandkids' grandkids will be very grateful.
