re the foden situation - he needs to be played

Very presumptuous of you all we are saying in 90 mins against the us foden should have been used.
He is clearly an outstanding player for his club but what has he done for England that would make Southgate choose him to come on ahead of Grealish or Rashford? And it was a particular game at a particular moment in time. Foden’s talents may be more useful than Grealish’s in the next game, for example.

I personally feel like quite a lot of dissatisfied England fans had presumed Southgate wouldn’t pick Bellingham to start and had fired up their broadsides, ready to be launched in the direction of the dugout. If he hadn’t played Saka on Friday and we’d drawn 0-0, they’d be furious. What’s Foden done for England, why’s he on instead of Saka, etc, etc, etc.

Kane, Sterling, Saka, Foden, Grealish, Maddison, Rashford. All outstanding footballers in their own right
Personally, I wouldn't be putting Foden in the same category of 'quality' as Rashford or Sterling.

By the end of Foden's career, I have no doubt he will be looked at as one of Englands greatest ever talents....Sterling & Rashford won't be looked at in that same high regard.

If Raheem Sterling was white he’d be one of the most celebrated English players of all time IMO.

Kane, Sterling, Saka, Foden, Grealish, Maddison, Rashford. All outstanding footballers in their own right. You can’t play them all. And certainly not after you’ve just won 6-2 and are trying to progress through a difficult group in a pressurised situation.

I guarantee that if Southgate had started Foden and we’d drawn 0-0, those on this thread demanding Foden’s inclusion would’ve been incredulous that Southgate had had the brass neck to leave Saka or Grealish on the bench. Which is exactly what they did during the Euros, when we reached the final for the first time.

We see it with Boro TBF. Boro players ALWAYS seem to get better the more games they don’t play.

I don't know Viv. I think Gestede definitely managed to get worse. And given the amount of games he missed we should've been comparing him to Lewandowski by the end 😉

That’s a ludicrous comment and completely without merit

I don't know whether its because of his skin colour, but Sterling certainly gets praised by the teaspoon and criticised by the shovel full.
Ever present in the team that got to a World Cup Semi Final. Named in the team of the tournament in a team that reached the final of the Euros. Joint fifth highest goalscorer for England who isn't an out and out striker. But is the first player to get flak...

I know he hasn't played his best for England in that period but very few have.
the difference is the others HAVE done it at other times for England, Foden hasn't done it ever, yet

As for him not having 360 degree awareness thats just rubbish, its almost like you haven't watched him play for City.
I didn't say he hasn't, I said maybe he hasn't developed that fully. It's a key difference playing centrally to out wide. I've seen him drift central, and lose the ball for City, I know that.

I get the argument that Southgate likes a certain type of player and if he gets results then that justifies every decision he makes. That doesn't mean to say we wouldn't have got a result playing in a different style either.
It also doesn't mean that claiming he would have got a result playing in a different way would happen, simply because a fan can perceive that it would work. Southgate has done superb for England, it's undeniable, yes we've dropped off the last 6 months, but all managers have sticky periods. Southgate has deserved the opportunity to lead us into this world cup, on merit, and deserves more support than the armchair England fans have given him. It's not just Southgate though, the knives were out for Bobby Robson back in 1990 too

Well he has his chance to shine against poor opposition. Might be interesting to see if he raises his game above the mediocre performances in the past.

No reason to see why we should build a team around him. He just isn't that influential without his man City team mates.

Hes exactly the same as mount, saka, sterling or grealish. They have moments but can't carry a team.
