Sunderlands attendance thread

I always thought the free ticket thing was hoax or a jibe an urban myth used to mock the mackems.

But no it’s real I was sat at work a few years ago snd my colleagues phone rang and it was from her kid Sunderland had offered free tickets to the school.
We should do the same.

Why are you looking at their board 😵‍💫 they’re irrelevant to us

I used to go on there just to read the craic on their Newcastle megathread. It was often hilarious, good banter, but since the saudi take over that thread has turned to pure bile and hatred.

The age old attendance thing, rolled out by teams who have nothing else to cling to.

Based on catchment areas/average attendances ish -

Newcastle 1.1m / 52k = 1:21
Sunderland 600k / 42k = 1:14.2
Boro 360k / 26k = 1:13.8

Obviously the catchment areas are very fuzzy as these are Tyneside, Wearside and Teesside and take into account Newcastle/Northumberland and Sunderland /Co. Durham (and Billingham 😉). South Tyneside is confusing as to numbers of Geordies/mackems, as is Hartlepool.

So, for all the biggest matchday attendances Boro cannot magically expand past it's population and it is what it is.

Fact. 👍

Sunderland fans pretty much come from the city of Durham and all the small towns and villages between it and the city of Sunderland itself. It’s not exclusively Mackem of course as I do know Newcastle supporting people from places like Spennymoor.

The Mackems have a massive area of support.

You're underestimating the size of our catchment area.

Fact
Yes, but he's also underestimating the size of both of their catchment areas.

Who really cares about it anyway. The only thing I'm bothered about is Boro's attendance versus our own. If attendances are up compared to our average then we are doing well and the ground feels buzzing. If they are down versus our average then generally the ground feels a bit lacklustre.

Ultimately there's 3 main factors to Boro's attendances:
Price
Division we are playing in
Form

I feel like we have got the first one wrong but it's not going to change so no point whinging.

To be fair if Newcastle had experienced the last 10 years that Sunderland have then SJP would be half empty too.
Newcastle as with every club have their fair share of fickle supporters, many from the Darlington area 😁

Both Sunderland and Newcastle are historically better supported clubs than us, probably goes back to their relative success in the early days of the professional game, not a big deal really. We went down to a hard core of about 5k in our really bad days, Sunderland around 10k and the Mags about 13k. However, only one of the three has won something this century and only two of the three in the last fifty years!

A good point well made, though I think the Sunderland catchment is nearer 900k. I reckon Newcastle and Sunderland system close to 2m between them . As you say the boundaries are blurred.
People will argue our catchment is bigger, but make the mistake of adding in Hartelpool.
Which ever way you cut it, they both should be getting at least double our crowds when in the same division.

Made the same point to one of them on their board who was trying to give it the big licks and belittle us. They never have an answer for it.
Problem is, for most of our fans 2004 will soon seem far enough away in the past to be as irrelevant as 1973 is.
Then we will only have historical successes to compare and we fall short there.
Let them belittle us, None of it matters anyway really. The reason we support Boro is not because we won a cup in 2004, or that our attendance is a certain % of catchment area.

Sunderland did do well in the 1930s - they were known as the Bank of England Club, because they had so much money In 1935 they finished second in the equivalent of the Premier league, won it in 1936 and won the FAC in 1937. This helped them build up a strong supporter base. Most of their support in from the City of Sunderland, Durham City, Washington New Town, South Shields, Peterlee, Bishop Auckland, Consett and all the many ex coal mining villages/small towns in Durham (Seaham, Easington, Blackhall, Trimdon, Bolden, Ryhope, Crook, Ferryhill, Houghton le Spring). When I lived north of the Tyne there was not many Sunderland fans. There used to be quite a few in Billingham (possibly people who had moved there from coal mining areas in the 1950 and 60s etc). Sunderland itself is quite old, it was famous for glass, pottery and wooden ships before the industrial revolution began. Unlike Middlesbrough which was only a few farms until 1830. I think this helped Sunderland as it was an established major town when the football club was formed. My guess is their catchment area is around 800,000 - Sunderland itself is 280k opposed to 157k for the Boro. (i.e 78% bigger)

Sarah Millican has one joke about being fat and eating cakes.
Mackems have one boast about massive crowds (who pay nowt).

They really are one dimensional up there. If only they could get that Newcastle sized chip off their shoulders.

I hate them because of personal experience in the 80's and the paedo rubbish, but I love them for their delusion and desperate pathetic obsession with Newcastle, who are simply on another level to them.
