I’d look at this a bit more cynically than the way the media (and some posters on here are reporting it).
The Uxbridge Conservative Association will have asked BJ to confirm whether he still wishes to stand as their candidate at the next election. For some reason, BJ has chosen now as the time to give that confirmation.
In completely unrelated news, next week BJ is giving evidence to the Privileges Committee about whether he misled Parliament. As others have said, their report might result in his suspension from Parliament, a recall petition and possible by-election.
Depending on how damning the findings of the Privileges Committee are, there may have been some push to deselect him by Uxbridge Conservative members. BJ has now avoided such action by being confirmed as their candidate at the next election (not necessarily a General Election).
Were he to win any by-election, during which there would be concerted and sustained pressure by opposition parties to unseat him, BJ would no doubt take that as a strong signal that he would also win at a General Election. Were he to lose, he would be free to seek the nomination for Nadine Dorries’ safe seat (who confirmed last month that she will be standing down at the next election).
