Trump - a last twist?

"God will continue to bless America". Sorry Nancy but you lost me in the first sentence. When religion, nationhood and politics come into alignment you're doomed.
Personally I don't think there's much to be gained from doing what she wants I think it might cause even more division and give him an even greater base

I've seen reports of only half a dozen Republicans who would support or 'consider' that motion - and the latest from 'people close to Pence' say he hasn't ruled it out. But I don't see it - it means the Republicans have to admit they supported an unfit President and I just don't see them doing it.

He must be brought to book, but the intricacies of how, and at what cost in all sorts of legal, base and political contexts are way beyond my ken.

Aye mine too. But there's every chance I'll be watching CNN again in the next 24-48 hours - and this coming from someone long since sworn off from watching any kind of news.

Putting more pressure on him to resign. They can’t get a super majority from Republicans in the Senate for impeachment, doubt Pence will go with A25

Surely he needs to be held accountable for his actions and behaviour though. What does is say about US democracy that it can be tarnished so easily and then fear of further division prevent the process of justice?
You're not wrong but just think about the fact that over 40 million voted for him this time around . I'm just concerned that it could just add to an already big rift.
He's got , what, one week left... The justice will hopefully come when he's out of office

Pelosi's concerns, among other things, appears the possibility of Trump pardoning those involved in the rioting and Trump standing in 2024. What guarantees are there Trump would get his comeuppance in court after he's left the White House? There's a risk of letting him get away.

Also, I suppose there's always the issue of the USA's international reputation on the line too. Already at rock bottom and nations around the globe gleefully having digs at what has occured last week, appearing weak on the issue of Trump will surely play into the hands of the Russians and Chinese.

And she's going to justify and just deepen the divide in some ways. There's an argument for it but just look at the long term and by that I mean 4 years sadly

Here's a radical idea, how about we let him have the option of running again for president and try and convince the 75 million Americans that voted for him why they shouldn't in future by maybe spending 4 years making America a more just society as opposed to banning him from running and calling those 75 million Americans racist idiots.

Just a thought.

Unless you're driven by hate and revenge, in which case, carry on.

So anyone can do what they want, free from consequences?

Why have laws, courts and prisons?

If someone commits a sexual offence against your daughter , why punish them. You could leave him free to do it again but try to convince him it isn't really okay to do so and hope he learns from your lesson and behaves?

Unless you're driven by hate and revenge?

How about the 40 odd million accepting they made a massive mistake in supporting a complete lunatic as the Republican Party leader and President? They ought to be ashamed of how it has turned out.

Then whatever Trump has coming to him will not cause any further division or further deaths.

Ultimate responsibility rests with the Trump voters here.

No, you're right, I see the error of my ways, let's hammer the b@stard, ban him from social media and just at the point when he was on the ropes and looking like a fraud to the entire world, make him a martyr.

Hearing of disturbing developments. An event planned on Parler before its shutdown, called 'The Million Militia March' on Inauguration Day. They've apparently been encouraging people to bring weapons and even execute Nancy Pelosi.

A Martyr? Some one who cries about being silenced but has his own press corp and could have a full press conference within minutes if he wanted too.
Who's deluded here?

The vast majority of Trump's votes were votes for the Republican Party. What Trump did through lies and manipulation was create a base that voted for Trump that augmented the GOP vote. In 2016 this tipped the balance, in 2020 it did not. The GOP now fears that Trump even if he does not run again could act as "kingmaker" by endorsing a "MAGA" candidate.

The problem with letting Trump get away with a failed insurrection is perhaps he or the next person to try it WONT fail.

If I go into a bank with a gun and fail to get any money do you let me off because I didn't get anything? As for making him a martyr, he will appear a martyr to his fan base whatever happens they will see this as part of the great conspiracy. I'm not sure what you can do about that level of delusion. You can however make sure that he can never run again and that his family are never in a position to do so. He is a sociopath he needs to be seen as such.
