VACCINE ESTIMATE

Bit of a side question....... once you've had the vaccine will you still wear a mask?

I assume the mask thing will be with us till the autumn unless there are amazing strides in reducing the infection rate that frees up the NHS. Or your doctor / nurse tattoos your forehead with 'VACCINATED' and their signature?

Yes, nothing changes in terms of the guidance on behaviour. Hands, face, space continues regardless as does mask wearing in accordance with current regulations

Its a hard ask for someone in their 80s and 90s considering the fact that they can't get it or pass it on

The vaccine is designed to prevent symptoms and stop people getting sick, it's not yet fully understood the impact on preventing transmission to others or contracting the virus yourself. That's why it's so crucial we all get vaccinated, so that if you do get it, it keeps you out of hospital. Other benefits will be a welcome by-product, but data is tbc on that

Edit - it is hoped of course that the vaccine will have a significant impact on transmission though,

Well there you go, thanks Artie. I wrongly assumed it would automatically prevent transmission as well. I can still shout at the 90 year olds to get their masks on then. :)

27 million and 39 million for me!

Is there any professional weighting beyond key workers from health, care and emergency services? Like air traffic control ahead of garden centres say? Or is sit imply age and underlying condition related?
I think its purely based on health risks currently, but don't forget that there are dozens of further potential vaccines in development, so there will be many more kits available over time, not that it helps your situation admittedly.

According to the Vaccine calculator linked above (Thanks for that) there are between 23m and 26m in front of me - which equates to late June mid July for the first of 2 jabs

Not sure thats right Artie. Surely it's purpose is to prevent people contracting it in the first place hence the efficacy measures. e.g. Pfizer vaccine:
"The vaccine is around 95% effective. This means that more than 9 people out of 10 will be prevented from catching Covid if they are vaccinated."

According to this June /Jul

Its fun playing around with that calculator. Putting my current age I would be due early April (based on 2m/week) but my Birthday in early March means my special present would be being brought forward a fortnight:)

You have to contract it for the antibodies or protiens or whatever the vaccine creates inside you to defeat it. It doesn't stop you catching Covid, it prevents Covid from being able to attack your immune system to the point that you become seriously ill.

There is still some debate unfortunately, I'll grant you that Konrad, but current comms is as follows. This applies to both vaccines currently being givenScreenshot_20210111-184521_Chrome.jpg

Well that's news. I don't understand how herd immunity can ever be achieved then if everyone who has the vaccine can still contract the virus.

Herd immunity is a very misleading term, at least based on current thinking. Earlier in the pandemic it may have been a more valid notion, but it's certainly not the current thinking behind the route out

Because people won't become seriously ill, so you can get Covid without requiring medical treatment. There is also a feeling that in many people it will be so effective it will see off the virus in short order so you won't be able to pass it on.

Once it isn't filling hospitals with people who can't fight it off we should be in a much better place.

Interesting, was the estimated doses a week figure the same as the first time you did it?
Yes I think so. So just did it s third time and now it's saying end of Feb to end of March . Very strange.

One thing I am not sure about is what do they class as chronic Asthma. I said yes but not sure they will say I am. Saying that I am 66 now and had it since 18 months old. Finding recently my medication does not seem to be as effective as it was.

Hope you get it sooner rather than later then mate.

Just had an email from work. We have had to cancel appointments for the public because of shortages, but as an employee and because over 65s are now eligible in NYS, I have appointments on Tuesday and 3 weeks after that for mine.
