You stupid Northerner

I've had loads of people at work, mocking the accent or phrases etc and going on about cobbled street, coal mines, outside toilets etc.

I guess nowadays I could probably take it to HR and make a big deal of it, but never felt the need to, I'm a big boy and can recognize the difference between people having a laugh with me and bullying/discrimination.

Similarly I have had loads of comments. All friendly but I get called 'Northern' quite regularly within a sports club I play and in work have had the whippet comment and where's your flat cap among other things. However, the tone of the comments in the article is somewhat different perhaps to the friendly manner in which these exchanges took place.

All my mates from Harrogate to this day call me Geordie,in my footy team they call me Teesside ( at least they know their geography)

I was once spat at in Dundee for being English. My dad was a Scot, granny was a Gaelic speaking Hebridean, went to a Scottish University ....

This sort of thing is very hard to prove unless you have witnesses or you are savvy enough to get a recording based on previous conversations.

Sometimes best just to swallow it and move on!

I had a job in the NHS in london, regularly got called a northern monkey by whites and blacks Asians and even one of my seniors said a monkey could do my job. It was one of reasons I resigned. Now if I was calling them monkeys id be sacked. I felt undervalued in my role and ridiculed for being northern
Come work in our kitchen at work. Been called a monkey would be the least offensive thing you'd be called. 😂

Love the differences between different workplaces.

Just interested to see the outcome, you were quite vocal in your criticism of me on this one so just good to set the record straight.
No you're not setting the record straight FatCat. You acted as judge and jury while the tribunal was ongoing when other folk on the board were cautioning you to hold off until the judgement was passed.

Revel in your 'success' all you want.

My criticism was along the lines of jumping to a conclusion before seeing the evidence.
That was one of the things you said- you also said I had no empathy.

It just seemed obvious from the outset hearing her story that it was made up - the tribunal agreed with my view also.

As it turns out half the comments I made were echoed by the tribunal then yes I will revel in it thank you very much.

That's quite a spiteful thing to say FatCat. It's comments like that which make you eminently dislikeable.
What’s spiteful - there were guys on here saying her accusations were true there was also me and others saying it was obviously false. Everybody said just wait until the case has been decided, which it has and that’s the result. Some people’s intuition was proven right some were proven wrong - it’s no big deal and it’s certainly not spiteful.
As I said at the time she could have ruined the careers of at least five honest people she had falsely accused - they may have lost their jobs, homes etc - now that is spiteful.
If you dislike me because my opinion differs to yours so be it - that happens daily on boards where things are debated.

Bullying is alive and well, some awful things have happened at the workplaces of people close to me. Even after hearings where it's proven nothing is being done to curtail it.
Bullying in the workplace is nothing new - I started working in the early 80s and it certainly happened to me at certain times along the way. Tribunals etc were not really an option back then and you just moved on.

I once had a Manager in London call me something derogatory in front of others in the office. For a few days he had also been particularly difficult. I walked straight over to him and said, ‘say that again’. He went very pale and walked away. Next Monday, HR called me in and asked me what had happened. I said that I hadn’t heard what he said so walked over and asked him to repeat what he had said. They inferred I had been aggressive which was only partially true as I had not sworn or raised my voice. Left me alone after that.

Always going to be hard to win a case like this when you're representing yourself and you're going up against GOSH and the money they will have spent on defending themselves in this case.

I used to know Cat about 10 years ago, I'd be surprised if she's made it up. Never struck me as the kind who would take something like this so far without something having happened. She was always a little unusual as not really conformist so I could well see somebody like her ending up being bullied.
