Wilder

If Wilder could have got/kept the players he wanted for the system he wanted to play he'd have done well. But that's not realistic for a Championship side without parachute payments, especially since covid.

Our real strength is our academy when it comes to plugging the gaps when we can't afford/attract the right player for a particular role. It's so frustrating that despite Wilder knowing that Fry, Jones, Coburn, Tav and Spence were all products of the academy - and all either successfully performing in his side or for other sides - he overlooked it completely when building his squad for this season. You've got to wonder whether Jones or Coburn would have been anywhere near the squad if Wilder had come in before they broke into the side.

I'm glad as have a manager now who is more focused on what we have rather than always worrying about what we don't have!

I gave Wilder every opportunity but always felt there was something about him that I couldn't put a finger on and mentioned it on here on several occasions.

Regarding Fry, you don't become a bad footballer overnight and I always felt he would make a good partnership with Lenihan.
He was an arrogant gobshyte, plain and simple. A mate of mine was constantly telling me that Wilder would get us promoted, even this season when we were playing rubbish and losing. I told him that wilder is full of it. No man should need to say that much without actually saying anything at all. Wilder did it at every opportunity.

Wasn't he asked about the academy players and said something like "none are anywhere near ready yet" or something like that?

Basically looks like he couldn't be arsed even looking at them. Was seemingly happier watching Mowatt running through treacle trying to play a high press he didn't have the legs for.

I`ve just dug this out of the box in the electronic attic.
Its the report of Wilder`s last Media Conference before that Coventry Match [October 1st 2022]

Beyond Our Wilderest Dreams

Wilder Point.jpg

Since starting his career at Southampton as a youth, Chris Wilder played 448 games in a career spanning almost 20 years.
His Managerial career began at non-league Alfreton, where he managed them for 27 weeks, winning them 4 trophies in the process!
What followed was 6 years at Halifax, 8 years at Oxford, 2 years at Northampton and 3 years at Sheffield United. An outstanding record Managing hundreds of players amounting to 978 games! [so far].

As Chris pointed out in his Friday Media Conference - he is no quitter, no novice and no fool. He pointed out that every club he has Managed has been "in trouble" - and hes taken every club to the next level and beyond. The reason for mentioning these stats is to reassure fans and others that we have a Manager who knows his onions. He is aware of the disappointing start of the season and the need for him, and his Management Team, to reflect and take action to rectify the situation quickly. I have documented dozens of times, Chris has never been backwards in coming forwards in taking responsibility and apologising when its been appropriate. He`s shown humility at times, but is also blunt and straight-forward with anyone when its needed, whether journalists, players, commentators, TV, Radio or anyone else. What you see is what you get.

Chris Wilder.....

"The top and bottom of it is I was employed to win games of football and, at the moment, I`m not enjoying it, because my team and my football club are not winning games of football".

Pressure (?)

"I enjoy the pressure"..its what its all about. The here and now is a "test of the players, of coaching staff and Manager and of the football club".
This league is wide open. "Its not like the Premier League....with 4 leagues in one..." where there are guaranteed winners at the top and the rest.
This is.."not a time for anybody to walk away". "We have to dig in, grind out results and make people feel better".

As for rumours, gossip and speculation on social media and elsewhere, Chris laughed at some of the suggestions, but said he didn`t have social media accounts - unlike some other Managers - preferring to focus on the serious job of managing players and getting the team to the next level. "Everybody has to deal with noise and nonsense..". "I can understand a little loss of faith and trust"[from the fans], but "I`ll never try to spin opinion with the fans..". "I`m still contracted for a further 18 months". He`s not going anywhere - there was a steely look in his eye and an expression which said "don`t ask me that again". Move on!

"Is [your] future away from Middlesbrough with Bournemouth"?

A resounding "NO"! was his response. He was unequivocal. No one was left with any doubt:

" 100% NOT. Its nonsense what`s happened. I dealt with that speculation a month ago and put it to bed. Its come from nowhere, where its not needed by anybody, I`ve just laughed it off really". "I think that`s what happens when teams don`t get results that maybe they expected.....its part of the industry you have to deal with". He was disparaging of journalists and others, claiming that untruths and speculation was "...disrespectful to players, the Manager and the football club". "(I)...concentrate on what (I) control". I still have the "hunger" - 100%". My drive to take MFC to the higher level (?) "Its huge". Chris Wilder says convincingly, that he loves football as an apprentice, a player, a coach and a Manager". The "fire" is still in his belly.

Coventry?

There has been a lot of work on the training pitch for goal-keeping coaches, focusing on fitness and strength. He described Mowatt, Clark and Rodrego as "under-cooked" - from that I gathered he meant they werent up to the standard he expects of players to be chosen for the first team. Certainly, we should expect more of seasoned pro`s like Mowatt and Clarke, but Rodrego arrived not long before the break and needs to sharpen up fast.

Darnell Fisher?

He was delighted that Darnell, who has spent "15 months away from the lights" and has toughed it out to get back on the grass.
"I must give an enormous amount of credit to the boy"
Asked would he be back in full training and considered for a return to the first team soon (?) chris indicated that it would maybe around Christmas time - but he couldnt say for certain - that was up to the Doctor and coaches.

Time to go again and do our best to get those three points(y)

He never warmed to the fans and we didn't really warm to him. He always appered Arrogant, aloof and angry. His man management (Fry) and being able to spot a player before his very eyes (Hackney) was nothing short of appalling. We are well rid and now (hopefully) moving in the right direction.

Was after the cup defeat to Barnsley in August.

Must have done their confidence the world of good knowing they could work their bollox off for the U-23s and still be nowhere near the first team squad.

And now we see Hackney, immediately given a chance after Wilder sacked.......😳😳

He always wanted more, which is fine if you also appreciate what you have (which he didn’t). Even when he was successful at the beginning, it was always wait and see what I can do when I get my own players. That can‘t have endeared him to the existing players and they gradually lost faith in him. Not saying that the players should have reacted that way, but they were clearly unhappy. Glad we now have a manager who appreciates them.

I thought it was a great fit between Boro and Wilder. It ended up being a bit of a disaster and all of his own making. Some of his comments to the media were bizarre.

Remember the post-match comment when he calls the players thick? It was clear something wasn’t right at that point.

There has been no rush for decwnt sized clubs for him either, man's a busted flush if he is incapable of tactically changing

He is the new Chris Hughton shown up by his replacement. How many jobs have cone available since he left. villa, Southampton, wolves, West Brom, Luton, qpr, Norwich & Wigan? I would guess he would be expecting lower end prem or high level championship. Can’t see who will take him

His issue is everyone has figured out how to play against his one magic tactic.

He is ****ed.
This, it happened at Sheff Utd as well, centreback comes forward, opposition win the ball then put a diagonal ball into the space vacated for a winger to run on to and put a simple ball across the 6 yard box for a tap in.

The players he wanted? We’re talking about and £8m midfielder and a £12m striker.. plus a few more overpaid non performing strikers.

Shame he binned off Hackney and Forss..

I think it could have been very different under Wilder, we looked brilliant at times, the football was exciting and we got some fantastic results.

Our form last season seemed to suddenly fall off a cliff and after the Preston disaster his comments suggested that he felt many of his players weren't up to the task and there would be summer of rebuilding.

But then we started the season with more or less the same side, looked OK over a difficult run of early games before another collapse.

I think he is a good manager, or at least his record is before us, but he does seem to be flawed and currently has huge question marks around him after the manner of his exit here and his previous job too.

The way he went on at Boro and the manner of his departure will be a massive red flag for most clubs, add to that how well a novice manager has done with his leftover team and he'll struggle to get a decent job.
Yep.(y)
He ripped himself a new wotsit in public.
In front of the camera he was blowing a gasket and spraying flak everywhere.
In the business, other Chairman, owners, agents, players and clubs will get to know and hear a lot more.
His card is marked before he turns up.
Sad, but ya makes ya bed.....
News travels fast in a whispering gallery.

That's why I said it's not realistic for a side in our position. It's fantasy football.

You know the people i feel sorry for are the backroom staff, there is obvious talent there. Now they are signing on because it seems Wilder spat his dummy out. Also I think its wrong to put Warnock in the same boat he came here to do a job and succeeded.
Warnock spoke well of the fans and area and steered us away from relegation . He did a good job .

Sad as **** calling someone a “dinosaur “ for being a defensive minded coach like . Our most successful periods as a club have come from defensive minded managers for **** sake

I mean people were ****** themselves silly when younger attack minded coaches came to the club like monk and wilder and it went flat as a fart with them . Jack Charlton was defensive minded. Defensive mclaren won us a cup , defensive karanka got us promoted, defensive pulis got us the playoffs

It’s the same **** with pulis too. I don’t get the need to hurl **** at him either . He also spoke well of the area and fans , no F***ing clue why with the venom directed at him. It got to people blaming pulis being blamed for braithwaite despite braithwaite pretty much wanting to leave right from the beginning under monk . Braithwaite shat on the fans and area , yet people sympathised and liked him more than pulis
